History of the Paden City Christian Church

In 1913, what is now the PADEN CITY CHRISTIAN CHURCH was established. A few families out of the PADEN FORK CHAPEL CHRISTIAN CHURCH first for a time held services on the top floor of the former Millers Pharmacy since the roads from Paden City to Paden Fork were very hard to travel at this time. On October 9, 1914, two lots on Main Street were obtained from Mr. S.S. Cunningham on which was built a concrete block church building. It was called the MAIN STREET CHURCH OF CHRIST. Here for more than thirty years the congregation would worship together.

In the early 1940’s, a fund was set up to build a new church building. However, it would be June, 1954, before construction would begin on the new brick structure. It was May, 1954, that the name officially became CHRISTIAN CHURCH. On Easter Sunday, 1956, church services were held in the new building for the first time. Dedication services followed July 22, 1956. The church was growing!

A decision to build a parsonage was made in 1962. Soon, there was a building loan of some $25,000.00 making it possible to purchase a lot and build the parsonage. Two years later, March 18, 1964, two lots on Fifth Avenue were purchased for church parking. Even at this time, there were rumors of a brand new stone church building.

The present PADEN CITY CHRISTIAN CHURCH meets here today because of action taken in March, 1969. A new auditorium was made possible by a building loan of some $125,000.00. It would be of stone construction with the contract being awarded to John Witschey Construction Company. One year later, March 22, 1970, dedication services were held in the new building.

In 1972, Phase II would begin the remodeling the Fellowship Hall and Classrooms throughout the building. All of this was a labor of love by many dedicated men and women of the church who gave unselfishly of their time and talent. It was in 1988 that the stone front was completed on the Fellowship Hall as a result of a two-year project of the Booster Class of the church.

The congregation is thankful for God’s blessings in her past and looks forward to serving our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the future.
